CONNECTING THE WORLD THROUGH PERFORMANCE ART
The Kurofune Ensemble is an exciting new collaboration between musicians, dancers and educators whose goal is to create a unique bridge between Japanese and American culture through performance art.
Kurofune means "black ships". This was the name given to vessels arriving to Japan during the Edo period, and became a symbol of the end of Japanese isolation.
With our 2016 Japan tour, we will present incredible Classical and Traditional Japanese music, Butoh and other dance forms of post-war America and Japan, experiment with improvisation, and work with young Japanese students to introduce them to new forms of expressivity, excitement, and communication. This kind of project has never been done, and we want to create lasting bonds and lasting impact.
Present the world class Classical Music, and Japanese traditional music - on one stage.
Interact with dancers from western and eastern styles, tracing their mutual influences.
Provoke thought about the importance of movement not only as an art form, but an overlooked activity in our daily lives.
Explore the concept of improvisation in dance and music with young people. Why is improvisation important for art education and empathy? How does improvisation make art so enjoyable?
Through art, convey a message of peace and empathy between East and West.
Enhance the international dialogue about the role of arts education, cross-cultural relations, and national identity.
Wake up the dormant creativity and individuality in all of us.
I am excited to present Kurofune-Ensemble, a very unique group of artists. When great traditions unite under the values of quality, curiosity and educating our youth, the result has a significant impact. Kurofune's 2016 activities in Boston and Japan will not only bring beautiful music and dance to new communities, but also start an important global dialogue about art education from a cross-cultural perspective.
